Hotmelt-Klebstoffe für Kartonverpackungen basieren fast ausschließlich auf petrochemischen Grundstoffen. Einzelne Alternativen auf Basis nachwachsender Rohstoffe stehen zwar zur Verfügung, haben den Eintritt in den Massenmarkt bis heute jedoch nicht geschafft. Ziel des Vorhabens ist es, biobasierte Hotmelt-Klebstoffe zu entwickeln und hinsichtlich Rohstoffsituation, Kosten, Verarbeitungseigenschaften, Klebkraft, Alterung und Rezyklierbarkeit zu bewerten und zur Anwendung zu bringen. Die Vorteile der neu zu entwickelnden Klebstoffe liegen im Einsatz gut verfügbarer nachwachsender Rohstoffe (Stärke, Chitosan und weitere Polysaccharide) sowie in den zu erwartenden positiven Einflüssen auf die Rezyklierbarkeit solcher Produkte, sowohl in Bezug auf die Reduzierung klebender Verunreinigungen (Stickies) als auch hinsichtlich der Migration von unerwünschten Inhaltsstoffen in verpackte Lebensmittel.

 

Hot melt adhesives for cardboard packaging are based almost exclusively on petrochemical feedstocks. Although there are some alternatives based on regenerative raw materials, they have not as yet successfully managed to enter the mass market. The objective of this research project is to develop bio‑based hot melt adhesives, to evaluate them with regard to the raw material situation, costs, processing properties, adhesive strength, ageing and recyclability and to make use of them in practice. The advantages of the new adhesives to be developed are the use of readily available regenerative raw materials (starch, chitosan and other polysaccharides) as well as the expected positive impacts on the recyclability of such products, both in respect of reducing stickies and also with regard to the migration of undesirable substances into packaged food. The institutes intend to achieve the project objectives by involving a consortium comprised of the starch industry, manufacturers of additives and adhesives, mechanical engineers and plant manufacturers for adhesive systems as well as the packaging industry.
